PRAIRIE VIEW – A three-point shot by Jeremiah Gambrell sealed the deal as the Prairie View A&M Panthers grab a 70-67 victory over Alabama State University Saturday evening in the William J. Nicks Building.
Gambrell was the leading scorer in the contest, finishing with a career high 26 points along with two rebounds, six assist and one steal. Two other players were in double figures, including
Markedric Bell with 13, and
Jawaun Daniels 10.
Bell had a game high of 11 rebounds, while adding three assists and four blocks. Daniels had six rebounds, two assists and a steal.
D'Rell Roberts added eight points, seven rebounds, five assists and one block to the win.
PVAMU hit 42.1 percent (24-for-57) from the field, the Panthers were also deadly from around the arc, hitting 11-of-23 for a 47.8 percent mark.
The lead changed hands 11 times and the score was also tied 11 times. The Hornets had the upper hand in the first half, leading the Panthers with a 34-29 half time lead.
After trading control of the contest through the first 15 minutes of the second half, the game was knotted at 61-61 with 4:14 left on a layup by Dewayne Cox. This put the Panthers back on top as the two teams continued to battle. With 15 seconds left in the game Alabama State tied the game for a final time at 67-67. Gambrell buried a 3-pointer to seal the victory for PVAMU.
Alabama A&M visits the William J. Nicks Building Monday night with tip off set for 7:30 p.m. following the women's contest.
