PRAIRIE VIEW – With less than 13 seconds left in regulation
Will Douglas put up a remarkable shot to push the Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern teams into extended time, but that would be the end for the Panthers as they could not close out the game falling 75-74 in overtime Southwestern Athletic Conference men's basketball action Saturday evening.
While everyone was sitting on the edge of their seats with seven seconds left in overtime a 3-pt attempt by Douglas appeared to be going in, but a rebound by
Jawaun Daniels only scored two as the Texas Southern walked away with the win over the Panthers.
The Panthers got 25 points and four rebounds from Douglas, who was 6-for-7 at the free throw line.
D'Rell Roberts scored 18 points, while Daniels had his first double-double of the season adding 12 points and 10 rebounds. He also had five assists, one block and steal.
TSU jumped on top early, but the Panthers came right back tying the first half six times prior to taking a seven point lead into the intermission, 40-33.
The Panthers lead increased to 13 (50-37) at the 14:10 mark, but Texas Southern slowly worked its way back into the contest in the second half 6-0 run to take a 57-55 lead with 6:15 left on the clock. TSU advanced their lead by five with 3:31 left in regulation. Douglas scored a 3-pointer with 48 seconds left to make it a 67-65, TSU lead.
After a missed jumper by TSU's Jordan Gilliam and a defensive rebound by Jeremiah Gambrell allowed Douglas to make a last second shot forcing the two teams into overtime, knotted at 67-67.
The Tigers got on the board first with a layup in the paint. A missed basket by Gambrell gave
Christian Guess a rebound and lay the ball back up into the basket. Over the next two minutes left in overtime the two teams traded baskets, until TSU took a final lead of 75-74 to close out the game.
