Prairie View A&M comes up short in 89-61 loss to Washington State

PULLMAN, WA --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team could not keep up in an 89-61 loss to the Washington State Cougars on the road Sunday.

The Lady Panthers (2-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Diana Rosenthal, who had 18 points. Gerlyn Smith added 12 points and Desiree Lewis helped out with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Lewis pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Prairie View A&M, grabbing 18 boards and turning them into 20 second chance points.

How It Happened

Prairie View A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 23-15 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Panthers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 40-27 halftime deficit.

Washington State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 67-32 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Rosenthal, to trim its deficit to 67-37 with 2:19 to go in the third. Washington State countered and stretched its lead to 79-44 heading into the fourth. Prairie View A&M's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled five of the team's 17 third-quarter points.

Prairie View A&M kept the Cougars from increasing their lead before going on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 81-52 with 7:11 to go in the contest. The Lady Panthers kept their comeback going, but Washington State managed to hold on for the 89-61 win. Prairie View A&M got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring nine of its 17 total points.
