GRAMBLING, La. – Prairie View A&M finished the weekend series versus Grambling State with a 1-2 overall record, falling in game one 9-3, game two 10-1 and winning the final game 8-3.
How It Happened:
Game 1
GSU 9, PVAMU 3
- Grambling got on the board first Friday, to take an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, tacking on one more run in the bottom of the third with a 3-0 advantage.
- In the top of the fourth, Alex Martinez would have a lead-off walk. With two outs, Martinez crossed home plate for the Panther's first run on Paul Castro's RBI single through the left side, to make it 3-1.
- The Tigers hit a homerun in the bottom of the fourth to push their lead to 4-1, as PVAMU started to close the gap in the top of the fifth. Damarie Smih would single to right field, advancing to second as Tre Turner was walked, advancing to third on a sac bunt the Panthers had runners on both second and third. A wild pitch brought Smith home to cut the lead to 4-2.
- The Panthers scored in the top of the seventh. In the bottom half of the seventh GSU scored five runs to take the win 9-3.
- Robert Maldonado was credited with the loss after pitching 6.2 innings, striking out eight.
Game 2
GSU 10, PVAMU 1
- Grambling would get on the board scoring two in the bottom of the second inning on a double to right center and then again on a two-out RBI single. GSU scored six runs in the bottom of the third, before PVAMU scored a two-out RBI single to the short stop by Castro.
- GSU scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 10-1 and take the win.
- Victor Mendoza was credited with the loss on the mound. Martinez went 2-for-4 to lead the Panthers offense.
Game 3
PVAMU 8, GSU 3
- The Panthers picked up a big win on Sunday, beating Grambling 8-3.
- Grambling State took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. PVAMU would respond scoring on a wild pitch by Matt Heiskell.
- The Panthers Gilbert Gonzales used an RBI single to bring a run home and made the score 2-1.
- In the top of the seventh five runs on five hits gave PVAMU a 7-1 lead. After a defensive change by Grambling. Jordon Ginn hit a single to right field, before Zach Trevino stepped to plate with a bunt single to place runners on first and second. After a pitching change and one out the bases were loaded as Smith was hit by pitch. A passed ball scored Trevino to make the score 3-1.
- Kellen Rogers singled through the right side scoring Redman and Smith for the 2 RBI single. Ybarra was credited with a RBI single to center field scoring Rogers, before Martinez homered to left field.
- Grambling added a run in the bottom of the seventh. A homer from Jayden Williams made the score 8-2. GSU scored in the bottom of the ninth, but Joshua Larzabal would come in and get the final two outs to clinch the win for PVAMU 8-3.
- Derrick Curry got the win on the mound pitching 5.0 innings and striking out six batters. Martinez and Trevino both wen 2-for-4.
The Panthers will return to action when they host the Jarvis Christin Bulldogs for mid-week action, Wednesday March 23 for two seven innings. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Tankersley Field.
