Softball Completes Three Game Sweep Over the Lady Lions

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – The Prairie View A&M softball team established their dominance Saturday on the road, defeating Arkansas Pine Bluff twice on Saturday to take the Southwestern Athletic Conference sweep this weekend.

GAME 1
PVAMU 8, UAPB 3
  • In the first game of the series, the Lady Panthers got on the board first in the second inning with a Jaylyn Davis RBI single that would score Destinee Smith to take a 1-0 lead. 
  • PVAMU scored again in the top of the third on a Biviana Figueroa single to center field to score Natalie McLennan, who reached base on an error by the second baseman.
  • UAPB scored one run in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Lady Panthers.  The Lady Lions scored again in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.
  • A double by Taliya Talley and a single by Smith advanced the scored to 4-3.  Davis homered scoring Smith for a 6-3 lead in the top of the sixth. 
  • PVAMU added two more runs in the top of the seventh on an error by the catcher to advance the score to 7-3, before Smith doubled down the middle to score Audrey Garcia for an 8-3 score, which would conclude the game as the Lady Panthers took the win.
  • Freshman Cailin Massey (4-9) earned the win on the mound for the Lady Panthers.  Both Smith and Davis went 3-for-4 with three RBI.
GAME TWO
PVAMU 5, UAPB 3
  • Both teams went scoreless through two innings, before the Lady Panthers scored one run in the top of the third off of a Maddison Parker home run.  Allowing PVAMU to take a 1-0 lead.  UAPB responded with a single run in their half of the inning to knot the game at 1-1.
  • Figueroa opened the top of the fourth with a single to center field, before Garcia double to left to score Figueroa for a 2-1 lead.  Again the Lady Lions would answer with a double to left field to score one run before a sac bunt gave UAPB a 3-2 lead.
  • The top of the seventh was the difference maker for the Lady Panthers as they scored two runs on a Figueroa single to left field to score Massey, who reached base on a single.  Garcia doubled out at second, but not before McLennan and Makala Barnes scored.  PVAMU was able to hold the Lady Lions off to take the 5-3 victory.
  • Figueroa went 3-for-4 with two RBI to pace the Lady Panthers offense.  Jerrica Rojas earned her first win of the season moving her overall record to 1-2.
 
GAME 3
PVAMU 6, UAPB 4
  • In the final game of the weekend series Prairie View A&M took an early 3-1 lead in the top of the first.  Garcia singled to center field to score Figueroa, who reached base on a single.  Talley singled to score Parker and Garcia for the early lead.
  • A single from UAPB in the bottom of the first gave them the first score of the game.  Through three scoreless innings the Lady Panthers added to more runs to advance their score to 5-1 in the top of the fourth.  McLennan tripled to left center scoring Brandi Juarez.  Figueroa followed suit on a double to left center to score McLennan for the lead.
  • UAPB threatened in the bottom of the sixth scoring three runs for a 5-4 contest in favor of PVAMU.  The Lady Panthers topped off the game with a sixth run on a Figueroa double to left center to score Juarez for the 6-4 win as UAPB could not respond.
  • Massey earned the win on the mound and Figueroa again led the offense going 3-for-4 and two RBI.
 
Up Next:
The Prairie View A&M softball team will return to non-conference play when they travel to Nacogdoches, Texas to face the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks for a 3 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday, March 29.
