BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Prairie View A&M basketball team had its season come to a close Wednesday night, as the #8 seeded Panthers fell in the quarterfinals, to #1 seeded Alcorn State 64-63.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Panthers opened the first half with an eight point lead with 13:39 left on the clock. The Braves chipped away at Prairie View's lead the scoring went back-and-forth for a bit, until PVAMU took a seven point lead with 00.09 left. Two free throws by Alcorn closed out the half with the Panthers leading 39-34.
- PVAMU struggled to make a shot for the first eight minutes of the second half. A Jawaun Daniels free throw knotted the game at 40-40.
- A dog fight to the end was costly for the Panthers as they turned the ball over to allow the Braves to make a 3-point shot to tie the game at 54 to send the two teams into overtime.
- Some last second free throws sealed the deal for the Braves to take the 64-63 win.
- Junior Jeremiah Gambrell led the Panthers, with a 20 point effort. With the loss, Gambrell went 6-for-14 from around the arch and went 6-16 from the field, and had three rebounds, one assist, two blocks and two steals
- Graduate student Dewayne Cox and Daniels added 16 points and 12 points, respectively. Daniels had a season high 16 rebounds giving him his fifth double-double of the season.
- PVAMU finishes the 2021-22 season with a 8-19 overall record
