Panthers Complete Series Sweep Over UAPB

 
PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M baseball team swept the Arkansas Pine Bluff Golden Lions in the final three game series over the weekend to make it a complete sweep. The Panthers defeated UAPB by the scores of 10-4 on Friday, 10-9 on Saturday and 20-10 during Sunday's contest.  This moves PVAMU to 24-18 and 14-4 in conference play.
 
GAME ONE                                            
PVAMU 10, UAPB 4
  • In Friday's contest the Golden Lions got the scoring started in the top of the first placing three runs on the board.  The Panther scored their first run in the bottom of the second with Damarie Smith singling to the shortstop scoring Sebastian Coria, who singled up the middle earlier in the inning to make it a 3-1 game with UAPB leading.
  • The Panthers scored in the bottom of the third to take a 5-3 lead.  Ben Ybarra crossed the plate on, a fielder's choice, while Coria scored on a RBI single by Paul Castro.  Zach Trevino singled up the middle scoring Christian Mendez for a 4-3 lead.  With two runners on base Smith scored Castro on a RBI single to close out the inning.
  • The Panthers scored again in the bottom of the fourth when Brayden Johnson hit a RBI homerun out to center field advancing the Panthers score to 6-3.  Through 2 ½ scoreless innings, the Panthers struck again placing four more runs on the board at the bottom of the seventh.  Smith opened with a walk, followed by another walk by Tre Turner with runners on both first and second Alex Martinez doubled to right field scoring both runners.  After a pitching change by UAPB Johnson hit his second homer of the game his fifth of the season to make it a 10-3 game.
  • UAPB added a final run in the top of the ninth as the Panthers took the 10-4 win.
  • Robert Maldonado earned the win on the mound for the Panthers pitching 7.0 innings, while Samuel Denker pitched the final two innings.  Johnson led the offense going 3-for-5 with 3 RBI, Smith was also 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored.
 
GAME TWO
PVAMU 10, UAPB 9
  • In Saturday's game through two scoreless innings the Golden Lions struck first taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.  The Panthers responded in the bottom of their half of the inning with three runs to take the 3-2 lead.
  • Smith opened the inning with a walk, before Turner singled to advance Smith.  Johnson was hit by pitch to load the bases for Coria, who scored both Smith and Turner for a 2 RBI single to left field, as he was put out advancing to second.  Trevino tripled for an RBI, scoring Johnson to take the 3-2 lead for the Panthers.
  • The Lions responded adding a single run to knot the score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth.  UAPB added two more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead.  Arkansas Pine Bluff added another score in the top of the seventh advancing their lead to 6-3, after two and ½ scoreless innings for the Panthers.
  • Prairie View A&M tied the game in their half of the seventh as the Panthers opened the inning with two back-to-back walks, before Turner hit a sac fly to right field advancing Keanu Maldonado.  Johnson hit a double RBI to right field to score Maldonado.  After a pitching change by UAPB the Panthers Martinez for a 2 RBI single and a 6-6 score.
  • The Panthers struck again in the bottom of the eighth as a couple of passed balls placed them in scoring position, Jayden Williams capitalized on them advancing the score to 7-6.  Two more walks by UAPB's pitching staff landed runners on both first and second, before Johnson hit an RBI single to center field.  Another passed ball landed Turner across the plate for the Panthers to take a 9-6 score.
  • UAPB added three to their run total to tie the game once again in the top of the ninth.  The Panthers were unable to answer as the two teams went into an extended inning.
  • Arkansas Pine Bluff came up short as they made some offensive changes.  It was up to the Panthers in the bottom of the 10th.  On a walk-off single to right field Martinez was the factor for PVAMU as he scored Johnson from first base to take the 10-9 win.
  • Martinez led the Panthers offensively going 2-for-6, while batting in three runs.  Michael Dews earned the win on the mound after pitching 1.1 innings allowing only one hit and no runs.
 
GAME THREE
PVAMU 20, UAPB 10
  • The Panthers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in game three of the final series.  With one out and a runner on first Ybarra doubled to right field for an RBI and a 1-0 lead over UAPB.  Martinez also doubled, but to center field scoring Ybarra for an RBI run and advancing the lead to 2-0.  With the bases loaded Castro singled to left field for a 2 RBI score, before Trevino single to center field for a final panther score in the bottom of the first.
  • UAPB responded with two runs in the top of the second to get on the board.  PVAMU added a run in the bottom of their half on a RBI sac fly by Coria making the score 6-2.  The Golden Lions made the score 8-6 in the top of the third taking their lead back.
  • The Panthers struck again scoring one in the bottom of the third off of an Ybarra RBI single to right center.  PVAMU added four runs in the bottom of the fourth.  After Johnson doubled to center field to open the inning, Coria singled up the middle scoring Johnson.  The scoring continued with a double RBI by Dominic Cox scoring Coria, before Trevino singled to left center for a 2 RBI score to advance the Panthers lead 11-8.
  • PVAMU continued their scoring frenzy in the bottom of the six adding five more runs as Cox opened the inning with a home run.  Trevino scored for a 13-8 PV lead when Turner grounded out to the short stop.  With runners on each corner Martinez hit an RBI single up the middle, before Coria hit a 2 RBI single to right field for a final 16-8 inning score.
  • UAPB came right back with a two run home run to center field to threaten a comeback, but that was the final score for the Golden Lions as PVAMU added four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 20-10 lead and game after eight complete innings.  A trio of players scored in the inning off of a single, a double and a wild pitch to take the overall series sweep over the Lions.
  • Derrick Curry earned the win on the mound for the Panthers, striking out three and only allowing two runs.  Coria led the offense for the PVAMU going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and five runners batted in.

The Panthers will return to action when they play head to Lorman, Miss to face Alcorn State for a SWAC series on Friday, April 29 for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
