PRAIRIE VIEW – In a competitive matchup between the Prairie View A&M University football team and the University of Incarnate Word, the Panthers could not hold off the Cardinals as they took the 31-14 victory.
How it happened:
The Panthers opened the half on the receiving end of the ball, as freshman CJ Dumas got his collegiate start at the quarterback position. The Panthers were unable to get their momentum going as the first drive ended quickly as UIW's defense was stifling.
UIW marched 70 yards down the field for the first score of the game, making the score 6-0 (missed PAT). The Panthers were able to get something together on their next possession moving the ball 66 yards into the Cardinals territory. A personal foul by UIW helped as well, turning the possession into a two yard run up the middle by
Ahmad Antoine for a touchdown. Leaving 6:27 left on the clock in the first quarter.
On the Cardinals next possession they advanced the score to 14-7 and that's where it ended for quarter one. Going into the second quarter UIW added six more points and another missed PAT to set up the Panthers offense. Again Dumas and the Panthers struggled to get on the other side of the 50-yard hash.
The Panthers defense changed the tables as Antoine blocked a punt on the UIW 20 yard line returning it to the eight. PVAMU was in striking distance, but just couldn't find the notch they needed to get into the end zone. This led to a 32 yard field goal attempt put the Panthers in a better position. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way for the Panthers as the field goal was missed.
Both teams had unsuccessful scoring drives ending the half with the Cardinals leading 20-7.
The teams returned to the field and UIW owning the first possession to start the third quarter. The Cardinals scored leaving 10:41 on the clock in the third quarter. The Panthers again couldn't get much going as both teams traded punt returns. With less than six minutes remaining in the quarter UIW scored again advancing their lead to 31-7.
A couple of miscues in the final frame by the Panthers and a stifling defense added a final score for both teams ending the game 31-14 in favor of the Cardinals.
PVAMU finished the game with 222 yards of offense, rushing for 163 net yards and passing for 59. Antoine ran for a team-high 91 yards on 15 attempts, and two touchdowns.
Chris Herron had 50 yards rushing, while also completing two of his three passes for 22 yards.
Dylan Domel led the PV wide outs with one reception for 27 yards.
DeJuan Lewis led the Panthers in tackles with 11 stops, while Tre'vion Green,
Stacy Brown and
Keyshawn Johnson had nine tackles apiece. Johnson had 1.0 sacks, forcing a fumble.
Adrian Lacy had three tackles, and the only INT for the Panthers.
The Panthers return to action next Saturday as they travel to Montgomery, Alabama to take on the Hornets of Alabama State for a 5 p.m. kick-off.
