MONTGOMERY, Ala. -Â Diana Rosenthal hit a game-tying 3-pointer with seven seconds left on the clock to send the game to overtime, but the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team was outscored 14-11 in the extra period and fell 77-74 to the Alabama State Lady Hornets on the road Saturday.
The Panthers (8-10, 5-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Rosenthal, who had 26 points and three steals. TaMiracle Taylor tacked on 10 points and Kennedy Paul added eight points and seven rebounds.
The Prairie View A&M offense was strong from downtown, knocking down nine threes on 23 attempts. Rosenthal hit four treys for the Panthers in the contest.
Prairie View A&M forced 16 Alabama State turnovers. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 13 points on the offensive end of the floor. Rosenthal's three steals led the way for Prairie View A&M.
How It Happened
Prairie View A&M started out the scoring by going on a 5-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Taylor, to take an early lead with 8:22 left in the first quarter. The Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-13 advantage. Prairie View A&M relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 16 points.
The Panthers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 31-30.
The Panthers then outscored Alabama State 17-15 in the third period to overtake the Lady Hornets and grab a 47-46 lead heading into quarter number four. Prairie View A&M knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 17 total points.
Prairie View A&M then surrendered that advantage as Alabama State forced overtime by tying things up at 63-63 by the end of the fourth. Prairie View A&M fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 16 points.
Alabama State then snagged a 70-65 advantage with 2:29 left in the first overtime before Prairie View A&M responded by going on a 7-0 run to seize a 72-70 lead with 51 seconds to go in the period. Alabama State re-asserted control, outscoring the Lady Panthers 7-2 the rest of the way to hand Prairie View A&M the 77-74 loss.
