Defensive effort leads Prairie View A&M past Texas Southern 60-54

HOUSTON, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team held Texas Southern to just 8.3 percent from beyond the arc in a 2-for-24 shooting performance on the way to a 60-54 victory against the Lady Tigers on the road Saturday.

The Panthers (9-11, 6-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Kennedy Paul, who had 16 points. TaMiracle Taylor tacked on 16 points and two steals and Jessica Soders added two points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Led by Soders' three offensive rebounds, Prairie View A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in six second chance points.

The Prairie View A&M defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 22 Texas Southern turnovers while committing 18. Those takeaways turned into 17 points on the offensive end of the floor. Diana Rosenthal led the way individually for the Panthers with three steals.

How It Happened

Prairie View A&M kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 13-11.

Texas Southern kept adding to that lead, building a 25-21 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 9-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Gerlyn Smith, to take a 30-25 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Prairie View A&M was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 19 points.

After intermission, Prairie View A&M held on to its advantage and owned a 40-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled three of the team's 10 third-quarter points.

Prairie View A&M kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Taylor's three, to grow the lead to 48-39 with 5:46 to go in the contest. The Lady Tigers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Panthers still cruised the rest of the way for the 60-54 win. Prairie View A&M fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 20 points.
