PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team held to just 9.1 percent from deep in a 1-for-11 shooting performance on the way to a 101-44 win over the at-home Thursday.
The Panthers (3-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Ryann Payne, who had 18 points. Adreanna Waddle added 13 points, seven rebounds, and two steals off the bench and Mia Monroe helped out with 13 points off of the bench.
Led by Waddle's two offensive rebounds, Prairie View A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in 19 second-chance points.
The Prairie View A&M defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Thursday's game, forcing 36 turnovers while committing 24. Those takeaways turned into 34 points on the offensive end of the floor. Desiree Lewis led the way individually for the Panthers with three steals.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 9-4 advantage, Prairie View A&M went on an 8-0 run with 6:20 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Gerlyn Smith, to increase its lead to 17-4. The Panthers then added six points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter-break with a 26-7 advantage. Prairie View A&M did most of its first-quarter damage in the paint, scoring 16 of its 26 points close to the basket.
Prairie View A&M built that first-quarter lead to 38-11 before going on a 22-0 run starting at the 5:28 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 60-11. They cut into that lead, but the Panthers still enjoyed a 60-15 advantage heading into halftime. Prairie View A&M forced 12 turnovers in the period and turned them into 16 points.
Prairie View A&M continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run to expand its lead further to 70-22 with 4:58 to go in the third. The Panthers held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with an 80-32 edge. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 20 points in the paint.
Prairie View A&M kept widening that lead, expanding it to 86-36 before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 92-36 with 6:12 to go in the contest. The Panthers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 101-44 win. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 21 points in the paint.
