PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team got a 19-point showing from the bench, but fell 81-43 to the Washington State Cougars at home Sunday.
Gerlyn Smith led the Panthers (3-2) with eight points and six rebounds. Ryann Payne also added 14 points and Nyam Thornton chipped in as well with four points and two steals.
How It Happened
Prairie View A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 19-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Panthers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 41-21 halftime deficit.
Washington State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 49-25 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run to trim its deficit to 49-31 with 3:45 to go in the third. Washington State countered and stretched its lead to 59-33 heading into the fourth. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint.
Prairie View A&M could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 81-43. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 10 points in the paint.
