PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team shot 50 percent from beyond the arc on the way to a 102-62 victory against the Huston-Tillotson Rams at home Thursday.
The Panthers (1-0) had five players score in double figures, led by Ryann Payne, who had 18 points, six assists and three steals. Jessica Soders tacked on 11 points and four steals and Mikayla Hutchinson helped out with 11 points off the bench.
Prairie View A&M took advantage of fantastic ball movement in Thursday's game, piling up 21 assists on 36 made field goals. Payne's six assists paced the Panthers and Jayda Bowen also contributed with four assists of her own.
Prairie View A&M's defense held Huston-Tillotson to only 36.4 percent shooting from the field.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 7-4 advantage, Prairie View A&M went on an 8-0 run with 7:38 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Lafaedria Green, to increase its lead to 15-4. The Panthers then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 28-17 advantage. Prairie View A&M capitalized on 11 Huston-Tillotson turnovers in the period, turning them into 12 points on the other end of the floor.
Prairie View A&M kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 16-0 run starting at the 7:42 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 50-23. The Panthers proceeded to tack on four points to that lead and enjoyed a 63-32 advantage heading into halftime. Prairie View A&M dominated in the paint, scoring 20 of its 35 points close to the basket.
Prairie View A&M continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run to expand its lead further to 75-40 with 3:23 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Rams had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Panthers still entered the fourth quarter with a 80-48 edge. Prairie View A&M's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 11 of the team's 17 third-quarter points.
Prairie View A&M kept widening that lead, expanding it to 94-59 before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 102-59 with 1:39 to go in the contest. The Rams narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Panthers still cruised the rest of the way for the 102-62 win. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 22 points in the paint.
