PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --Five Panthers put up double-digit points and Prairie View A&M beat the Wiley Wildcats 107-32 at home Saturday.
The Panthers (4-6) had five players score in double figures, led by Ryann Payne, who had 22 points and six steals. Kayla Smith tacked on 17 points and two steals off the bench and Amauri Williams helped out with 15 points.
Prairie View A&M out-rebounded Wiley 36-25 in Saturday's game, led by Adreanna Waddle's nine boards. The Panthers also collected 15 offensive rebounds and scored 24 second chance points.
Prairie View A&M did a great job disrupting Wiley shots in the contest, coming away with seven blocks. Waddle's six rejections led the way individually for the Panthers.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 4-2 advantage, Prairie View A&M went on a 19-0 run with 7:24 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Maya Williams, to increase its lead to 23-2. The Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 25-6 advantage. Prairie View A&M capitalized on nine Wiley turnovers in the period, turning them into 13 points on the other end of the floor.
Prairie View A&M kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 11-0 run starting at the 9:23 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 36-6. The Panthers proceeded to tack on 15 points to that lead and enjoyed a 58-13 advantage heading into halftime. Prairie View A&M forced 13 Wiley turnovers in the period and turned them into 23 points.
Prairie View A&M continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Desiree Lewis, to expand its lead further to 76-23 with 1:01 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Wildcats had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Panthers still entered the fourth quarter with a 79-27 edge. Prairie View A&M knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 21 total points.
Prairie View A&M started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 19-0 run, finished off by Waddle's jumper, to grow the lead to 98-27 with 5:14 to go in the contest. The Panthers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 107-32 win. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 20 of its 28 points in the paint.
