Payne scores 21 points in Prairie View A&M's 82-54 loss to Grambling

GRAMBLING, LA --Ryann Payne scored 21 points, but the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team fell to the Grambling Tigers 82-54 on the road Saturday.

Payne added four assists to her 21 point game to lead the Panthers (4-7, 0-1). Desiree Lewis helped out with nine points, eight rebounds and two steals and Amauri Williams chipped in with seven points and six rebounds.

Lewis pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Prairie View A&M, grabbing 14 boards and turning them into 11 second chance points.

The Prairie View A&M defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 17 Grambling turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 10 points on the other end of the floor. Lewis' two steals led the way individually for the Panthers.

How It Happened

After falling behind 12-8, Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run with 3:14 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Jada Roberson, to take a 14-12 lead. Grambling then responded to tie things up at 14-14 heading into the second quarter. Prairie View A&M capitalized on 10 Grambling turnovers in the period, turning them into four points on the other end of the floor.

The Tigers then took control in the second quarter and the Panthers entered haltime behind 35-25.

Prairie View A&M's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Panthers faced a 64-38 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M turned one offensive rebounds into two second chance points on the way to scoring 13 total points in the quarter.

Prairie View A&M could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 82-54. Prairie View A&M took advantage of two Grambling turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of those takeaways.
