Prairie View A&M falls to Southern

BATON ROUGE, LA --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team got a 23-point showing from the bench, but fell 84-56 to the Southern Jaguars on the road Monday.

The Panthers (4-8, 0-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Ryann Payne, who had 14 points and three steals. Jada Roberson added 12 points, six rebounds and two steals off the bench and Amauri Williams chipped in as well with 11 points.

Prairie View A&M forced 19 Southern turnovers. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 19 points on the other end of the floor. Payne's three steals led the way for Prairie View A&M.

How It Happened

Prairie View A&M kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 18-15.

The Panthers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 38-23 halftime deficit.

Southern continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 54-33 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on an 8-0 run to trim its deficit to 54-41 with 45 seconds to go in the third. Southern countered and stretched its lead to 58-41 heading into the fourth. Prairie View A&M took advantage of six Southern turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of takeaways.

Southern kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing an 84-50 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Payne's layup, to shrink the deficit to 84-56 with 21 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.
