Prairie View A&M gets 37 bench points in win over Mississippi Valley State

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team got a 37-point showing from the bench on the way to an 83-69 victory against the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils at home Saturday.

The Panthers (5-8, 1-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Jessica Soders, who had 16 points. Adreanna Waddle added 14 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks off the bench and Ryann Payne helped out with 12 points and three steals.

Led by Waddle's six offensive rebounds, Prairie View A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 24 boards that resulted in 25 second-chance points.

Prairie View A&M forced 25 Mississippi Valley State turnovers while committing 23 themselves in Saturday's game. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 26 points on the other end of the floor. Payne's three steals led the way for Prairie View A&M.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 17-13 advantage, Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run with 2:28 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 23-13. The Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 23-15 advantage. Prairie View A&M did most of its first-quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 23 points close to the basket.

Prairie View A&M kept its first-quarter lead intact before going on a 10-0 run starting at the 8:15 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Jada Roberson, to increase its lead to 33-15. The Panthers kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 45-27 advantage heading into halftime. Prairie View A&M dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 22 points close to the basket.

Following intermission, Prairie View A&M continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 52-28 before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Waddle, to expand its lead further to 59-28 with 6:38 to go in the third. The Panthers held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 73-42 edge. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring 18 of its 28 points in the paint.

The Panthers then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 10 points.
