JACKSON, MS --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team could not keep up in a 91-54 loss to the Jackson State Tigers on the road Saturday.
Ryann Payne led the Panthers (5-9, 1-3) with 19 points, four assists and five steals. Jessica Soders tacked on nine points and three blocks and Adreanna Waddle chipped in as well with seven points, six rebounds and two blocks off the bench.
Prairie View A&M forced 19 Jackson State turnovers. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 15 points on the offensive end of the floor. Payne's five steals led the way for Prairie View A&M.
How It Happened
Prairie View A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 21-13 at the end of the first quarter.
The Panthers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 49-25 halftime deficit.
Prairie View A&M's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Panthers faced a 67-35 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M scored two fast break points in the quarter.
Jackson State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing an 87-46 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Waddle's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 87-52 with 56 seconds to go in the contest. Jackson State responded and outscored the Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 91-54. Prairie View A&M got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring eight of its 19 total points.
