Prairie View A&M gets 19 bench points in 61-55 victory over Alcorn State

LORMAN, MS --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team got a 19-point performance from the bench on the way to a 61-55 victory over the Alcorn State Braves on the road Monday.

The Panthers (6-9, 2-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Ryann Payne, who had 16 points, six rebounds and two steals. Amauri Williams tacked on 12 points off of the bench and Adreanna Waddle chipped in as well with 10 points, nine rebounds and two blocks.

Prairie View A&M out-rebounded Alcorn State 38-27 in Monday's game, led by Waddle's nine boards. The Panthers also pulled down 14 offensive rebounds and scored 12 second chance points.

The Prairie View A&M defense held Alcorn State shooters to only 38 percent from the field. The Panthers also kept Zy'Nyia White to 3-of-12 shooting in the game. The Braves did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only eight offensive rebounds and scored seven second chance points.

How It Happened

After falling behind 12-6, Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run with 1:49 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Payne, to narrow its deficit to 12-11. Alcorn State answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Panthers down 14-11 entering the second quarter.

Alcorn State kept adding to that lead, building a 29-19 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 9-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Payne, to narrow its deficit to 29-28, a score that would hold until halftime.

Alcorn State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 42-38 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Williams, to grab a 44-42 lead with 2:48 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Panthers added one point to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 49-46 edge. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 21 points in the paint.

The Braves proceeded to tie things up at 55-55 before Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run to seize a 61-55 lead with 25 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint.
