Williams grabs 10 rebounds in Prairie View A&M's 46-43 win over Alabama State

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --Amauri Williams collected 10 rebounds, and the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team took down the Alabama State Hornets 46-43 at home Saturday.

Williams tacked on nine points to her 10-rebound game for the Panthers (7-9, 3-3). Ryann Payne helped out with 17 points, four assists, and three steals and Desiree Lewis chipped in with six points and four steals.

Prairie View A&M out-rebounded Alabama State 38-35 in Saturday's game, led by Williams' 10 boards. The Panthers also grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and scored 13 second-chance points.

Prairie View A&M did a great job disrupting Alabama State shots in the contest, coming away with seven blocks. Adreanna Waddle led the way individually for the Panthers with three rejections.

How It Happened

After falling behind 8-7, Prairie View A&M went on an 11-0 run with 4:14 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Waddle, to take an 18-8 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Prairie View A&M capitalized on nine Alabama State turnovers in the period, turning them into seven points on the other end of the floor.

The Panthers maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 29-24 edge. Prairie View A&M forced five Alabama State turnovers in the period and turned them into four points.

Prairie View A&M surrendered its halftime lead until, with the game tied at 29-29 they went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Payne, to grab a 37-29 lead with 5:23 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Panthers added one point to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 43-34 edge. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.

The Panthers then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring two fast break points.
