PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit at 46-36 with 3:21 left in the third quarter to take down the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 65-59 at home Monday
The Panthers (8-9, 4-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Ryann Payne, who had 27 points and four assists. Jada Roberson added 15 points and three steals and Jessica Soders added three points, six rebounds, and two steals.
Prairie View A&M out-rebounded Alabama A&M 30-26 in Monday's game, paced by Soders' six boards.
Prairie View A&M forced 22 Alabama A&M turnovers. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. Jayda Bowen led the way individually with four steals.
How It Happened
Prairie View A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 24-17 at the end of the first quarter.
Alabama A&M kept adding to that lead, building a 31-19 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Payne, to narrow its deficit to 31-27. The Panthers continued to chip away, reducing the Alabama A&M lead to 38-36 heading into the break.
Alabama A&M continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 46-36 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Payne, to trim its deficit to 46-43 with 51 seconds to go in the third. The Panthers were unable to cut further into the deficit but did not cede ground to Alabama A&M either and entered the fourth quarter trailing 48-45.
Prairie View A&M narrowed its deficit to 50-49 before going on a 14-0 run, finished off by Desiree Lewis' layup, to seize a 63-50 lead with 3:11 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Panthers still cruised the rest of the way for the 65-59 win. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 20 points in the paint.
