Prairie View A&M gets 25 bench points in 78-65 victory against Texas Southern

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team got a 25-point performance from the bench on the way to a 78-65 win against the Texas Southern Tigers at home Saturday.

The Panthers (9-9, 5-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Ryann Payne, who had 21 points, four assists and two steals. Adreanna Waddle tacked on 13 points and six rebounds and Gerlyn Smith chipped in as well with 11 points off the bench.

Prairie View A&M utilized fantastic ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 18 assists on 27 made field goals. Individually, Desiree Lewis led the way for the Panthers with four assists.

Prairie View A&M forced 22 Texas Southern turnovers while committing 21 themselves in Saturday's game. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 22 points on the other end of the floor. Jada Roberson's four steals led the way for Prairie View A&M.

How It Happened

After falling behind 7-6, Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run with 5:12 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Payne, to take an 11-7 lead. The Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-16 advantage. Prairie View A&M capitalized on eight Texas Southern turnovers in the period, turning them into nine points on the other end of the floor.

Prairie View A&M built that first-quarter lead to 23-19 before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 7:25 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Roberson, to increase its lead to 28-19. The Tigers cut into that lead, but the Panthers still enjoyed a 36-31 advantage heading into halftime. Prairie View A&M saw non-starters score five of its 19 total points off the bench in the quarter.

After intermission, Prairie View A&M held on to its advantage and owned a 52-47 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 16 points in the paint.

The Panthers coasted to the win from there, increasing their margin of victory by outscoring the Tigers 26-18 in the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 26 points in the paint.
