PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --Ryann Payne scored 20 points, but the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team fell to the UAPB Golden Lions 77-48 at home Monday.
Payne led the Panthers (5-9, 1-3) with 20 points. Desiree Lewis added three points and two steals and Gerlyn Smith helped out with five points and six rebounds off the bench.
Jada Roberson pulled down five offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second-chance opportunities for Prairie View A&M, grabbing 17 boards and turning them into 11 second-chance points.
Prairie View A&M forced 31 UAPB turnovers. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 21 points on the offensive end of the floor. Jayda Bowen led the way individually with three steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 9-5, Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run with 2:18 left in the first quarter to take a 10-9 lead. The Panthers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 11-10.
The Panthers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 28-12 halftime deficit.
Prairie View A&M's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Panthers faced a 57-30 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M took advantage of four UAPB turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.
UAPB kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 71-40 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 71-46 with 2:04 to go in the contest. UAPB responded and outscored the Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 77-48. Prairie View A&M took advantage of 10 UAPB turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of those takeaways.
