Martinez collects 4 hits in game one; Panthers out hits UHV but falls 6-4 in game two

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas --Senior Alex Martinez collected four hits to help power the Prairie View A&M Panthers over the University of Houston-Victoria 14-4 on Tuesday.

Senior Matthew Sandoval (1-0) got the win for Prairie View A&M (2-6). The right-hander went 3.1 innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on four hits, allowing three walks, and striking out one. Freshman Austin Bell also pitched well, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking one, and striking out two.

In addition to his four hits, Martinez had a double and two RBI to lead the Panthers. Junior Keanu Maldonado compiled a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Sophomore Alex Diaz also helped out for Prairie View A&M, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Panthers first put runs on the board in the first inning. Prairie View A&M got an RBI single from Martinez, scoring freshman Michael Burroughs from first base.

The game remained tied until the very next inning when the Panthers got going again on offense. Prairie View A&M plated two runs off of pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Diaz, which brought the score to 3-1 in favor of the Panthers.

Prairie View A&M kept UHV without a run before expanding their lead to 8-1 the following inning. The Panther's bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Maldonado.

The Jaguars fought back, closing the gap to 8-4 until Prairie View A&M added some insurance in the fifth. The Panthers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Martinez, bringing the Prairie View A&M advantage to 9-4.

The Panthers kept Houston-Victoria scoreless before expanding their lead to 14-4 the following inning. The Prairie View A&M offense piled up five runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of junior Tyran Norris. The score remained 14-4 for the rest of the game, as the Panthers coasted to the win.

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas --Despite picking up eight hits in the ballgame and out-hitting Houston-Victoria, Prairie View A&M was unable to push across more runs, as the Panthers were defeated by 6-4 Tuesday.

Junior Devin Aguado (0-2) started and took the loss on the mound for Prairie View A&M (2-7). Junior Tyrone Tubbs was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking none, and striking out two.

At the plate, the Panthers were led by sophomore Garrison Weiss, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a triple and a walk. Senior Zachary Trevino furnished a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Senior Alex Martinez also helped out for Prairie View A&M, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 4-0, the Panthers first put runs on the board in the first inning. Prairie View A&M managed to push across two runs in the inning.

They expanded their lead to 5-2 before the Panther's offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the third. Prairie View A&M scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Martinez, which tightened the lead to 5-3.
