2/5/2023 6:16:00 PM

D'IBERVILLE, Miss.  -  The final day of the SWAC East Round-up saw freshman Jayda Gordon receive SWAC Freshman of the Year and SWAC second-team honors, in individual play, while senior Stephanie Vasquez earned a place on the SWAC first-team.   Prairie View A&M bowling team finished third during the 2023 SWAC Round-Up II with an overall record of 8-6.

"I am very proud of this team's performance this weekend," said head PVAMU Bowling Coach Glenn White.  "Being a fairly young and inexperienced team, I think they did a great job of grinding through some tough competition on a very challenging oil pattern.  I'm also proud of Jayda for earning Freshman of the Year honors and second-team SWAC All-Conference, while Stephanie received SWAC first-team.  This was truly a total team effort.  We look forward to the SWAC Championship Tournament next month."

During Round-up I, PVAMU had a 9-5 record to finish overall with a total 17-11 SWAC Round-up record.  They finished two places behind the 2023 SWAC Regular Season Champions Southern (20-8) and last year's SWAC Champions Alabama State (18-10).

The ladies did finish in front of 4th place Texas Southern (16-12), 5th place Florida A&M (14-14), 6th Jackson State (14-14), Alabama A&M finished in 7th (12-16), while Grambling State rounded out all teams in 8th place and a 1-27 overall record.

The individual players were based upon averages of bowlers who bowled at least 27 games to be eligible for the individual awards.   Vasquez competed in all 27 games averaging 196.52 and an overall total pin count of 5,306 to finish fifth overall.  Gordon finished eighth overall with a 193.04 average and a total count of 4,826 after competing in 25 games. Gordon also finished as the SWAC's top freshman in the freshman standings.

Sophomore Victoria Cobos competed in 22 games and had a total pin-fall of 4,101 and a 186.41 average, while sophomore Amani Moore had a 180.96 and a total pin-fall of 4,343 after competing in 24 games.  Moore was followed by freshman Miranda Fuentes with a 178.62 average and a 2,335 pin-fall competing in only 24 games. Graduate student Ivelisse Reyes and junior Ashlyn Okazaki rounded out the team's overall pin-fall of 25,810 to give the Lady Panthers a third-place finish.

Through the three-day event, PVAMU garnished wins over Texas Southern twice (827-815| 924-796); Florida A&M twice (946-870| 905-739); Grambling State twice (941-714| 887-755); Alabama A&M (913-836); and Jackson State (964-909).
