PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --Junior Brandi Juarez and freshman Mia Nunez each racked up three RBIs to help lead the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers past the Southern Lady Jaguars 8-3 on Friday for Southwestern Athletic Conference opening play.
Sophomore Cailin Massey (2-5) started in the circle and picked up the win for Prairie View A&M (2-13, 1-0). The right-hander went five innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on eight hits, allowing no walks and striking out six. Sophomore Hailey Elizarraras also made an impact in the circle for the Lady Panthers, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing two hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.
Nunez went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, a home run and a walk in addition to her three RBIs and Juarez put together a 1-for-2 day, supplementing her three RBI performance for the Lady Panthers. Junior Biviana Figueroa compiled a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lady Panthers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Hannah Garza came across to score the lone run of the inning for Prairie View A&M and get them on the board.
After the Lady Jaguars rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Lady Panthers came back to retake the lead in the fourth inning. The Prairie View A&M offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Nunez, which brought the Lady Panthers to lead to 5-1.
Southern narrowed Prairie View A&M's lead to 5-3 before the Lady Panthers stretched the advantage to 8-3 in the fifth inning. The Lady Panthers recorded three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a Juarez. The score remained 8-3 for the rest of the game, as Prairie View A&M coasted to the win.
