GAME 2 | Prairie View A&M 7, Texas Southern 5

HOUSTON, Texas -- Sophomore Cailin Massey was dominant on Tuesday, striking out nine Texas Southern hitters over nine innings of work to help propel the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers past the Lady Tigers 7-5.

In addition to her nine strikeouts, Massey (2-5) went nine innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on 12 hits and walking two for Prairie View A&M (6-15, 5-0).

Junior Biviana Figueroa led the way offensively for the Lady Panthers, going 3-for-4 in the ballgame with two home runs, a walk and two RBI. Massey provided a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and an RBI. Freshman Mia Nunez also helped out, going 3-for-5 for Prairie View A&M with a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Lady Panthers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Prairie View A&M scored twice, with one run coming across on freshman Destinee Smith's single.

The Lady Panthers lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the sixth trailing 3-2. Prairie View A&M picked up a run on Figueroa's leadoff home run off of junior L. Bell, which evened the score at 3-3.

That 3-3 tie turned into a 4-3 Prairie View A&M lead in the seventh. The Lady Panthers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Nunez.

The Lady Tigers then tied the game at four before Prairie View A&M fought back to reclaim their advantage in the eighth inning. The Lady Panthers picked up a run on Figueroa's leadoff dinger off Bell, bringing the Prairie View A&M advantage to 5-4.

Texas Southern fired back to tie the game at five before the Lady Panthers reclaimed a 7-5 advantage in the ninth inning. Prairie View A&M picked up two runs, including one on a solo dinger off the bat of Massey. The score remained 7-5 for the rest of the game, as the Lady Panthers held on for the win.
