BIRMINGHAM, AL --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team got a 30-point showing from the bench but fell 64-37 to the Southern Lady Jaguars at Bartow Arena Thursday.
Kennedi Heard led the Panthers (15-15) with 12 points. Jessica Soders also tacked on five points and two blocks off of the bench and Jayda Bowen chipped in as well with seven points off the bench.
Led by Desiree Lewis' two offensive rebounds, Prairie View A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in five second-chance points.
Prairie View A&M forced 19 Southern turnovers. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 11 points on the offensive end of the floor. Lewis led the way individually with two steals.
How It Happened
Prairie View A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 16-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The Panthers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 31-12 halftime deficit.
Southern continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 53-15 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 53-20 with 1:02 to go in the third. The Panthers continued to reduce the Southern lead, shrinking it to 55-23 by the end of the third quarter. Prairie View A&M's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 11 of the team's 11 third-quarter points.
Prairie View A&M narrowed its deficit to 58-29 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Heard's three, to shrink the deficit to 58-35 with 4:25 to go in the contest. Southern responded and outscored the Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 64-37. Prairie View A&M fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 14 points.
