PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas --The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers took a 6-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 12-3 win over the Grambling Lady Tigers on Friday.
Sophomore Cailin Massey (8-5) started in the circle and picked up the win for Prairie View A&M (20-15, 16-0). The right-hander went five innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on five hits, allowing no walks and striking out four.
Massey led the way offensively for the Lady Panthers, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run and two RBI. Junior Audrey Garcia compiled a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-2 with a walk and three RBI. Junior Biviana Figueroa also helped out, going 2-for-3 for Prairie View A&M with two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lady Panthers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Prairie View A&M's offense started clicking and put up six runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Garcia and a two-run home run from Massey.
The Lady Tigers then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 6-1 until the Lady Panthers expanded their advantage in the third. The Prairie View A&M offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Figueroa, which brought the score to 10-1 in favor of the Lady Panthers.
Prairie View A&M held Grambling without a run before expanding their lead to 12-1 the following inning. Grambling put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Prairie View A&M still coasted to the 12-3 win.
