Lady Panthers Volleyball team defeats Texas A&M-Commerce 3-1

COMMERCE, TX --The Prairie View A&M volleyball team fought back after dropping the first set to secure a 3-1 win (21-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-14) against the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions Tuesday on the road at Field House.

The non-conference victory moved the Lady Panthers' overall record to 3-4 on the season.

The Lady Panthers offense was paced by Kylee Owens, who finished with 16 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .419. Nyah Walker added 15 and Leila Smalls chipped in with 11 as part of a Prairie View A&M attack that had four players with double-digit kills. Defensively, had three players reach double figures in digs, including Jaqueline Nino's 17, 14 from Leah Lawson, and 10 more from Makinzie Taplin. From the front row, Kiersten Atkinson contributed six blocks and Janyah Henderson added five rejections.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Lady Panthers fell behind early, losing the first set 25-21. Prairie View A&M trailed by as many as eight points as Texas A&M-Commerce grabbed the advantage for good at 9-8 in a set that was knotted up four times before the Lions took control.

SET 2 | Prairie View A&M evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-16 set-two win. The Lady Panthers grabbed control of the set lead early on at 4-3 and never trailed. Prairie View A&M opened its biggest lead of the stanza, nine points, to finish off the set, totaling 19 kills in the set.

SET 3 | Prairie View A&M went up 2-1 after defeating the Lions in set three. The Lady Panthers captured the third set 25-22. Prairie View A&M took the lead for good at 13-12 after coming back from a one-point deficit, the Lion's largest lead of the set. This came in a set that featured eight ties and six lead changes. The Prairie View A&M offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza. Prairie View A&M's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking five Texas A&M-Commerce attacks in the stanza.

SET 4 | Prairie View A&M ended the match with a 25-14 fourth-set victory, winning their third set in a row. The Lady Panthers scored first and never trailed in the set to earn the victory. Prairie View A&M opened up as much as a 12-point lead at 21-9 before closing out the stanza, collecting 17 kills while only committing one attack error in the set.
