Women's Basketball wins turnover battle but loses to the Washington Huskies in Non-Conference Clash

SEATTLE, WA --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team had 10 fewer turnovers than the Washington Huskies, but fell 65-50 to the Huskies on the road Friday in a challenging regular non-conference encounter at the Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle, WA.

The game started off competitively, with the Panthers keeping pace with the Huskies in the first half, ending with a score of 25-31. Despite strong efforts, Prairie View A&M couldn't overcome Washington's lead in the second half. Ash'a Thompson led the Panthers with an impressive performance, scoring 14 points. Other notable contributions included Nyam Thornton who added 13 points and made a significant impact with a three-pointer, along with critical turns of play. Adreanna Waddle supported the defensive efforts significantly with five rebounds and two blocks.

Led by Amauri Williams' two offensive rebounds, Prairie View A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 10 second chance points.

The match highlighted key turnovers and vital rebounds by Thompson which were crucial moments although not sufficient to secure a win. The Panthers also saw important scores from Williams who contributed a key three-pointer in the game.

The Prairie View A&M defense caused its share of mistakes in Friday's game, forcing 18 Washington turnovers while committing eight. Those takeaways turned into seven points on the offensive end of the floor. Jelissa Reese led the way individually for the Panthers with three steals.

Looking ahead, the Panthers must regroup as they face Georgia on November 26, 2024 for a 5 pm CT tip-off in Athens, Ga., inside the Stegeman Coliseum. With a current season record standing at 2 wins and 2 losses, the team remains ready to tackle the ongoing challenges in their schedule.

How It Happened

Prairie View A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 20-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Prairie View A&M then started the second quarter by going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Waddle, to narrow its deficit to 20-19. Washington responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Panthers trailing 31-25 heading into halftime.

Washington continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 34-27 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on an 11-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Waddle, to grab a 38-34 lead with 5:26 to go in the third. Washington responded to seize a 49-42 lead entering the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 17 points in the paint.

Prairie View A&M could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 65-50. Prairie View A&M pulled down three offensive rebounds to score four second-chance points out of eight total in the period
