Women's Basketball Fall to Georgia Bulldogs 79-62 in Athens

ATHENS, GA --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team got a 28-point performance from the bench, at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, GA. Despite a valiant effort by the Panthers, they succumbed to the Lady Bulldogs with a final score of 79-62.

During the game, the Panthers trailed slightly at halftime with a score of 35-39. Prairie View A&M's Mikayla Hutchinson led the scoring for the Panthers with 13 points, followed by  Amauri Williams who added 10 points, and Kaci Chairs who chipped 10 points along with four assists and three steals off the bench. Noteworthy performances also included Nyam Thornton with four points, pulling down two offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second-chance opportunities for Prairie View A&M, grabbing 10 boards and turning them into six second-chance points.  While CJ Wilson, added six points, one rebound, and one steal. Together, these players provided a glimpse of the Panthers' potential, maintaining high intensity throughout the game.

The Prairie View A&M defense caused its share of mistakes in Tuesday's game, forcing 18 Georgia turnovers. Those takeaways turned into nine points on the other end of the floor. Chairs' three steals led the way individually for the Panthers.

The Panthers now stand at a 2-3 record for the season. They look forward to their next challenge against Wichita State on December 2, 2024, at the Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas. The team is gearing up to improve their standing and secure a win in the upcoming contest.
 

How It Happened

After falling behind 4-0, Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run with 8:04 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Chairs, to take a 6-4 lead. The Panthers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 23-19.

The Panthers and Bulldogs then played an even second quarter making the halftime score 39-35 in favor of Georgia.

Prairie View A&M's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Panthers faced a 61-46 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled three of the team's 11 third-quarter points.

Georgia kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 70-46 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Cj Wilson's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 70-54 with 2:21 to go in the contest. Georgia responded and outscored the Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 79-62. Prairie View A&M got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring nine of its 16 total points.
