Women's Basketball Falls to Western Mich. Broncos in Non-Conference Clash

KALAMAZOO, MI --  In a challenging regular season non-conference women's basketball face-off, the Prairie View A&M experienced a tough loss getting a 20-point showing from the bench, against the Western Michigan Broncos with the final scoreboard reading 87-58. The contest took place at Read Fieldhouse/University Arena in Kalamazoo, MI, on Tuesday.

The Panthers struggled to keep up with the Broncos from the start, as showcased by the halftime score of Prairie View A&M 21, Western Mich. 46. Despite the Panthers' best efforts in the second half, they were unable to close the gap significantly. Nyam Thornton and Nia Jordan led the Panthers in scoring with 13 and 10 points, respectively, while CJ Wilson contributed more than just points, adding six rebounds and leading the team with four steals, marking her presence in the game with impactful fast breaks.

Prairie View A&M forced 15 Western Michigan turnovers. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 12 points on the other end of the floor. Wilson's two steals led the way for Prairie View A&M.

Other notable performances included Crystal Schultz also grabbing six rebounds. Despite these efforts, the Panthers are eyeing a recovery in their next game at Williams Arena in Minneapolis, MN, when they face off against Minnesota on Friday, December 20, 2024.

How It Happened

Prairie View A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 17-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The Panthers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 46-21 halftime deficit.

Western Michigan continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 66-36 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Kaci Chairs, to trim its deficit to 66-42 with 1:45 to go in the third. Western Michigan countered and stretched its lead to 70-44 heading into the fourth. Prairie View A&M scored 13 fast break points in the quarter.

Prairie View A&M could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 87-58. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
