PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --Ryann Payne scored 26 points and Gerlyn Smith had 13 more, but the Panthers fell to the Grambling Tigers 64-55 at home Monday.
The Panthers (9-14, 5-8) had two players score in double figures, led by Payne, who had 26 points and three steals. Smith tacked on 13 points, six rebounds and five assists and Jada Roberson added four points and two steals.
Prairie View A&M forced 24 Grambling turnovers while committing 18 themselves in Monday's game. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 10 points on the offensive end of the floor. Payne's three steals led the way for Prairie View A&M.
How It Happened
After falling behind 2-1, Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run with 8:31 left in the first quarter to take a 6-2 lead. The Panthers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 16-15.
The Panthers then rallied, outscoring the Tigers 16-10 in the second quarter to take a 31-26 halftime lead. Prairie View A&M forced eight Grambling turnovers in the period and turned them into four points.
Prairie View A&M then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Tigers 42-38 entering the fourth. Prairie View A&M took advantage of seven Grambling turnovers in the quarter, scoring two points off of takeaways.
Prairie View A&M could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 64-55. Prairie View A&M got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring seven fast break points.
