PINE BLUFF, ARK --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team got a 42-point performance from the bench on the way to a 66-57 victory against the UAPB Golden Lions on the road Saturday.
Kayla Smith led the Panthers (10-14, 6-8) with 20 points and two steals. Mikayla Hutchinson added six points and two steals and Maya Williams chipped in as well with two points and two steals off the bench.
Prairie View A&M utilized great ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 18 assists on 25 made field goals. Individually, Ryann Payne lent a helping hand the most for the Panthers with three assists.
The Prairie View A&M defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 16 UAPB turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 11 points on the other end of the floor. Desiree Lewis led the way individually for the Panthers with two steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 10-8, Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run with 3:00 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Jessica Soders, to take a 13-10 lead. UAPB then responded to tie things up at 13-13 heading into the second quarter. Prairie View A&M got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for six of its 13 total points.
Prairie View A&M turned the first quarter tie into a 23-22 lead before going on a 6-0 run to increase its lead to 29-22. The Panthers proceeded to tack on one point to that lead and enjoyed a 32-24 advantage heading into halftime. Prairie View A&M was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 19 points.
After intermission, Prairie View A&M held on to its advantage and owned a 46-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 14 total points.
Prairie View A&M kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Lafaedria Green's layup, to grow the lead to 59-50 with 4:43 to go in the contest. The Panthers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 66-57 win. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 20 points in the paint.
