ITTA BENA, MS --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team kept Mississippi Valley State to just 7.7 percent from 3-point range in a 1-for-13 shooting performance on the way to a 69-63 victory against the Delta Devils on the road Monday.
The Panthers (11-14, 7-8) had three players score in double figures, led by Ryann Payne, who put together a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Amauri Williams tacked on 15 points, eight rebounds and two steals and Jada Roberson chipped in as well with 10 points off the bench.
Led by Williams' six offensive rebounds, Prairie View A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 20 boards that resulted in 18 second chance points.
Prairie View A&M's defense held Mississippi Valley State to only 7.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 37.5 percent from the field.
How It Happened
Prairie View A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 19-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Prairie View A&M then cut the Delta Devils lead to 27-19 before going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Payne, to narrow its deficit to 27-25. Mississippi Valley State responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Panthers trailing 31-27 heading into halftime.
Prairie View A&M came out of halftime rallying and had constructed a 43-41 lead before going on a 12-0 run to expand its lead further to 55-41 with one second to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring 16 of its 28 points in the paint.
The Panthers then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M took advantage of three Mississippi Valley State turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
