PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team held Alcorn State to just 15.4 percent from 3-point range in a 2-for-13 shooting performance, but fell 55-53 to the Braves at home Saturday.
Ryann Payne led the Panthers (11-15, 7-9) with six points and three steals. Gerlyn Smith also added nine points and seven rebounds and Amauri Williams helped out with 11 points.
Led by Smith's three offensive rebounds, Prairie View A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in eight second chance points.
Prairie View A&M's defense held Alcorn State to only 15.4 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 34.7 percent from the field.
How It Happened
Prairie View A&M kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 11-7.
Alcorn State kept adding to that lead, building a 20-7 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run to narrow its deficit to 20-12. The Panthers continued to chip away, reducing the Alcorn State lead to 27-20 heading into the break.
Prairie View A&M came out of halftime on fire, going on a 9-0 run to grab a 29-27 lead with 6:21 to go in the third. The Panthers held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 38-36 edge. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 18 points in the paint.
The Braves proceeded to tie things up at 38-38 before Prairie View A&M went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Smith's jumper, to seize a 45-38 lead with 7:46 to go in the contest. Alcorn State then asserted control, outscoring the Panthers 17-8 the rest of the way to hand Prairie View A&M the 55-53 loss. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 15 points in the paint.
