Prairie View A&M rallies late, but falls to Jackson State 75-65

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team took a 50-49 advantage into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 75-65 to the Jackson State Tigers at home Monday.

The Panthers (11-16, 7-10) had two players score in double figures, led by Ryann Payne, who had 21 points and two steals. Jada Roberson added 10 points and five assists off of the bench and Gerlyn Smith added eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

Prairie View A&M shared the ball well in Monday's game, racking up 16 assists on 26 made field goals. Roberson's five assists paced the Panthers.

The Prairie View A&M defense was a problem in Monday's game, forcing 15 Jackson State turnovers while committing nine. Those takeaways turned into 17 points on the offensive end of the floor. Payne's two steals led the way individually for the Panthers.

How It Happened

Prairie View A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 21-15 at the end of the first quarter.

The Panthers and Tigers then played an even second quarter making the halftime score 34-28 in favor of Jackson State.

Jackson State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 38-31 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Smith, to trim its deficit to 38-37 with 4:14 to go in the third. The Panthers kept the rally going and took control on a Keshuna Luckett free throw with 00:18 left for a 50-49 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 12 of the team's 22 third-quarter points.

Jackson State proceeded to take a 52-50 lead before Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Payne's three, to seize a 55-52 lead with 8:10 to go in the contest. Jackson State re-asserted control, outscoring the Panthers 23-10 the rest of the way to hand Prairie View A&M the 75-65 loss. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.
