HOUSTON, TX --Javontae Hopkins scored 22 points, but the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team fell to the Texas Southern Tigers 93-78 on the road Saturday.
Hopkins added five rebounds and four assists to his 22-point game to lead the Panthers (10-21, 5-13). Charles Smith, IV helped out with 18 points and three steals and Lane, Jr.Charles chipped in with 15 points.
The Prairie View A&M defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 18 Texas Southern turnovers while committing 15. Those takeaways turned into 25 points on the offensive end of the floor. Smith IV's three steals led the way individually for the Panthers.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-0, Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run with 17:52 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Hopkins, to take a 6-5 lead. The Panthers then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 47-38.
Texas Southern kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 75-57 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Hopkins' layup, to shrink the deficit to 75-65 with 7:30 to go in the contest. Texas Southern responded and outscored the Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 93-78. Prairie View A&M capitalized on 11 Texas Southern turnovers in the period, collecting 15 points off those turnovers.
