Defensive effort not enough as Prairie View A&M women's basketball falls to Grambling

GRAMBLING, LA --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team kept Grambling to just 13.3 percent from 3-point range in a 2-for-15 shooting performance, but fell 75-54 to the Tigers on the road Thursday night.

The Panthers were trailing early in the game but managed to lead 19-15 by the end of the first quarter. However, the momentum shifted in the second quarter as Grambling capitalized on turnovers and dominated the boards, taking a 31-25 lead into halftime. The game continued to slip away from Prairie View in the second half, despite some strategic plays and fast breaks spearheaded by CJ Wilson, who notched 6 assists and managed crucial layups. Lydia Freeman of Grambling provided a significant challenge, leading her team with dominant inside play.

Key players for Prairie View included Adreanna Waddle, who led scoring efforts with 11 points. six rebounds and three blocks., and Ash'a Thompson, who contributed with nine points a team-high seven rebounds, and two steals. Mikayla Hutchinson also stood out, adding five points and leading with two steals, while CJ Wilson helped with seven points and six assists.

.Led by Thompson's three offensive rebounds, Prairie View A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in 15-second chance points.

Prairie View A&M did a great job disrupting Grambling shots in the contest, coming away with seven blocks. Waddle's three rejections led the way individually for the Panthers.

Despite this challenging loss, the Panthers look forward to revamping their strategies for their next game against the Southern University Jaguars, scheduled on February 15, 2025, at F.G. Clark Activity Center in Baton Rouge, LA. With a current record of 6-15 and a SWAC standing of 3-9, the team remains focused on finishing the season strong and making the necessary adjustments for upcoming games.

How It Happened

Prairie View A&M started off strong, putting together a 19-15 lead heading into the second quarter. Prairie View A&M did most of its first-quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 19 points close to the basket.

The Panthers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 31-25.

Grambling continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 49-38 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Amauri Williams, to trim its deficit to 49-44 with 14 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.

Prairie View A&M could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 75-54. Prairie View A&M fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 10 points.
