PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --Nyam Thornton knocked down a buzzer-beating shot with only one second left in the game to lead the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team past the UAPB Golden Lions 67-65 at home Saturday.
The Panthers (8-16, 5-10) had four players score in double figures, led by Ash'a Thompson, who had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Thornton added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists and Crystal Schultz chipped in as well with 11 points and two steals off of the bench.
Thompson pulled down six offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Prairie View A&M, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into 13 second chance points.
The Prairie View A&M defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 15 UAPB turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 10 points on the offensive end of the floor. Thompson's three steals led the way individually for the Panthers.
How It Happened
Prairie View A&M started out the scoring by going on a 6-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Cj Wilson, to take an early lead with 7:55 left in the first quarter. The Panthers then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 20-11 advantage. Prairie View A&M did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 20 points close to the basket.
The Panthers maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 30-29 edge. Prairie View A&M ran the fast break well, scoring four fast break points.
After intermission, Prairie View A&M added to its advantage and owned a 49-46 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Prairie View A&M then surrendered that advantage as UAPB forced overtime by tying things up at 59-59 by the end of the fourth. Prairie View A&M fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 10 points.
Prairie View A&M then took care of business in extra time, outscoring UAPB 8-6 to seize victory by the 67-65 final score.
