COLLEGE PARK, GA --Cj Wilson put the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team ahead for good with 3:19 to go the extra period to give the Panthers a 57-52 win over the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats at The Gateway Center Arena at College Park Tuesday.
The Panthers (10-18) had three players score in double figures, led by Nyam Thornton, who had 16 points and two steals. Amauri Williams tacked on 12 points and Wilson chipped in as well with 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Prairie View A&M's defense held Bethune-Cookman to only 10.5 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 30.9 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 7-6, Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run with 2:43 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Ash'A Thompson, to take a 12-7 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Prairie View A&M capitalized on five Bethune-Cookman turnovers in the period, turning them into six points on the other end of the floor.
The Panthers maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 22-21 edge.
After intermission, Prairie View A&M added to its advantage and owned a 32-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M took advantage of five Bethune-Cookman turnovers in the quarter, scoring three points off of takeaways.
Bethune-Cookman proceeded to take a 40-38 lead before Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run to seize a 44-40 lead with 18 seconds to go in the fourth. The Wildcats then fought back to even things up at 45-45 and send the game to overtime.
Bethune-Cookman then snagged a 48-45 advantage with 3:49 left in the first overtime before Prairie View A&M responded by going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Williams' jumper, to seize a 52-48 lead with 1:38 to go in the period. The Panthers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 57-52 win.
