Defensive effort not enough as Prairie View A&M falls to Texas Southern 69-49

COLLEGE PARK, GA --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team kept Texas Southern to just 38.6 percent shooting from the field, but fell 69-49 to the Tigers at The Gateway Center Arena at College Park Wednesday.

The Panthers (10-19) had two players score in double figures, led by Nyam Thornton, who had 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Cj Wilson added 10 points and seven rebounds and Mikayla Hutchinson added six points, six rebounds and five steals.

Led by Thornton's four offensive rebounds, Prairie View A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in 17 second chance points.

Prairie View A&M forced 15 Texas Southern turnovers while committing only nine themselves in Wednesday's game. The Panthers turned those takeaways into four points on the other end of the floor. Hutchinson's five steals led the way for Prairie View A&M.

How It Happened

Prairie View A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 21-14 at the end of the first quarter.

The Panthers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 34-26 halftime deficit.

Prairie View A&M's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Panthers faced a 51-36 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 10 points in the paint.

Prairie View A&M could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 69-49. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 13 points in the paint.
