2024–25 Prairie View A&M Women’s Basketball Season Recap

6/26/2025 8:00:00 AM

The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team wrapped up the 2024–25 season with a spirited effort in the second round of the SWAC Tournament, falling 69-49 to Texas Southern at the Gateway Center Arena in College Park, Georgia. Despite holding the Tigers to just 38.6 percent shooting from the field and forcing 15 turnovers, the Panthers could not overcome an early deficit.

PVAMU (10-19) demonstrated resilience and flashes of brilliance throughout the season, with young talent stepping into key roles and showing promise for the future. The team was led in its season finale by standout Nyam Thornton, who filled the stat sheet with 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Cj Wilson added 10 points and seven boards, while Mikayla Hutchinson made her presence known defensively with five steals to go along with six points and six rebounds.

The Panthers were relentless on the offensive glass, grabbing 14 offensive rebounds which led to 17 second chance points — a testament to their hustle and determination. Hutchinson's defensive energy and Thornton's leadership on both ends served as bright spots during a year of transition and development.

Throughout the season, Prairie View A&M showed a commitment to growth, grit, and team-oriented play. The team battled through a challenging non-conference schedule and picked up key wins in SWAC play, including hard-fought victories that highlighted their defensive potential and rebounding prowess.

Head Coach and staff continued to instill a culture of accountability and effort, which was evident in the team's improvement in turnover margin, rebounding intensity, and defensive tenacity.

As the Panthers close the chapter on the 2024–25 season, the foundation is firmly in place. With the continued development of its core players and promising newcomers on the horizon, Prairie View A&M is poised to take another step forward in the seasons to come.

The future is bright in Panther Country.
