Prairie View A&M Women's Basketball falls to Jackson State

JACKSON, MS --Cj Wilson scored 19 points and Alana Shields had 7 more, but the Lady Panthers fell to the Jackson State Lady Tigers 62-43 on the road Saturday.

Wilson led the Lady Panthers (2-15, 0-6) with 19 points and two steals. Shields tacked on seven points and two steals and Marckalia Celestine chipped in as well with six points, nine rebounds and two blocks from the bench.

The Prairie View A&M defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 20 Jackson State turnovers while committing 17. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. Wilson's two steals led the way individually for the Lady Panthers.

How It Happened

Prairie View A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 17-9 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Panthers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 29-18 halftime deficit.

After intermission, Prairie View A&M cut its deficit to 39-30 before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Shields, to trim its deficit to 39-35 with 3:15 to go in the third. Jackson State countered and stretched its lead to 47-35 heading into the fourth. Prairie View A&M took advantage of four Jackson State turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of takeaways.

Jackson State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 52-35 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on an 8-0 run to shrink the deficit to 52-43 with 4:42 to go in the contest. Jackson State responded and outscored the Lady Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 62-43. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring four of its eight points in the paint.
