PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team hit 10-of-24 attempts from three-point range, shooting 41.7 percent from deep in a 76-58 loss to the Alabama State Lady Hornets at home Saturday.
The Lady Panthers (2-17, 0-8) had three players score in double figures, led by Jacque Giron, who had 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Margan Allen added 12 points off of the bench and Crystal Schultz chipped in as well with 10 points.
The Prairie View A&M offense made hay from three-point land, making 10 threes on 24 attempts. Giron hit four treys for the Lady Panthers in the contest.
The Prairie View A&M defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 20 Alabama State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. Giron's three steals led the way individually for the Lady Panthers.
How It Happened
Prairie View A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 17-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Alabama State kept adding to that lead, building a 35-18 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a three from Giron, to narrow its deficit to 35-25, a score that would hold until halftime.
After intermission, Prairie View A&M cut its deficit to 37-28 before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three from Giron, to trim its deficit to 37-36 with 4:44 to go in the third. Alabama State countered and stretched its lead to 54-43 heading into the fourth. Prairie View A&M knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 18 total points.
Alabama State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 76-52 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Allen's three, to shrink the deficit to 76-58 with seven seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Prairie View A&M fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 15 points.
