PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --Crystal Schultz, Alana Shields and Cj Wilson combined to score 52 of Prairie View A&M's 63 total points, but the Lady Panthers fell to the Texas Southern Tigers 72-63 at home Saturday.
Schultz led the Lady Panthers (2-18, 0-9) with 21 points. Shields tacked on 16 points and two steals and Wilson chipped in as well a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Prairie View A&M's defense held Texas Southern to only 35.7 percent shooting from the field. The Lady Panthers also limited Da'Myiah Lewis to 3-of-12 shooting and 10 points in the game.
How It Happened
After falling behind 11-6, Prairie View A&M went on a 7-0 run with 4:01 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Shields, to take a 13-11 lead. Texas Southern then responded to tie things up at 13-13 heading into the second quarter. Prairie View A&M capitalized on three Texas Southern turnovers in the period, turning them into five points on the other end of the floor.
Texas Southern then took a 32-21 lead before Prairie View A&M responding by going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three from Shields, to narrow its deficit to 32-26, a score that would hold until halftime.
Prairie View A&M's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Panthers faced a 56-45 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 19 points in the paint.
Prairie View A&M narrowed its deficit in the fourth quarter, but could not get over the hump, losing 72-63. Prairie View A&M took advantage of seven Texas Southern turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
