Prairie View A&M falls to Mississippi Valley State

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team got a 14-point showing from the bench, but fell 67-45 to the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes at home Thursday.

The Lady Panthers (2-23, 0-14) had three players score in double figures, led by Crystal Schultz, who had 11 points and five steals. Alana Shields tacked on 11 points and two steals and Margan Allen chipped in as well with 10 points from the bench.

The Prairie View A&M defense held Mississippi Valley State shooters to just 37.7 percent from the field, including 25 percent from three-point range.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 9-5 advantage, Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run with 4:26 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Schultz, to increase its lead to 15-5. The Lady Panthers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 15-14.

The Lady Panthers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 24-17 halftime deficit.

Prairie View A&M came out of haltime rallying and had constructed a 30-19 lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Allen, to expand its lead further to 36-19 with 5:11 to go in the third. Mississippi Valley State responded to seize a 44-27 lead entering the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring six of its 10 points in the paint.

Prairie View A&M managed to gain control and had a 46-29 lead before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Schultz's layup, to grow the lead to 52-29 with 6:41 to go in the contest. Mississippi Valley State then asserted control, outscoring the Lady Panthers 38--7 the rest of the way to hand Prairie View A&M the 67-45 loss. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.
