PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team kept Alcorn State to just 19 percent from deep in a 4-for-21 shooting performance, but fell 48-38 to the Braves at home Saturday.
Cj Wilson recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Lady Panthers (2-26, 0-17). Jacque Giron also tacked on eight points and seven rebounds off the bench and Laila Robinson chipped in as well with four points and three blocks off of the bench.
Prairie View A&M's defense held Alcorn State to only 19 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 29 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 10-2, Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run with 1:06 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Robinson, to narrow its deficit to 10-7, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
The Lady Panthers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 27-15 halftime deficit.
Alcorn State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 34-20 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 7-0 run to trim its deficit to 34-27 with 21 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Prairie View A&M took advantage of six Alcorn State turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.
Alcorn State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 39-30 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Alana Shields' jumper, to shrink the deficit to 39-35 with 5:39 to go in the contest. Alcorn State responded and outscored the Lady Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 48-38. Prairie View A&M fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 11 points.
