LORMAN, Miss. – The Prairie View A&M softball team delivered a dominant performance on Saturday afternoon, sweeping a Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader against Alcorn State with an 8-3 victory in Game 1 followed by an 8-0 shutout in Game 2.
With the pair of wins, the Panthers improved to 14-11 overall and 6-0 in SWAC play, continuing their strong start in conference competition.
Game 1: Prairie View A&M 8, Alcorn State 3
Prairie View A&M jumped out early and never looked back, defeating the Lady Braves 8-3 behind a complete game effort from Yazmyn Stewart.
Stewart (4-2) earned the win in the circle after tossing seven innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits while walking five and striking out two.
The Panthers struck first in the second inning when
Kearstin Tinsley delivered a clutch two-run single that brought home
Reagan Green and
Ashlee Elizarraras to give Prairie View A&M a 2-0 lead.
After Alcorn State tied the game at two, Prairie View A&M responded in the fifth inning with three runs to reclaim control at 5-2.
The Panthers created even more separation in the sixth inning, their most productive frame of the game. Prairie View A&M plated three runs, highlighted by a two-run triple from
Mia Nunez, pushing the advantage to 8-2. Alcorn State added a late run, but Prairie View A&M held firm to secure the 8-3 victory.
Prairie View A&M out-hit the Lady Braves 9-6 and aggressively pressured the bases, swiping eight stolen bases in the contest.
Aryana Cruz and
Morgan Smith each recorded two steals to lead the Panthers' speed attack.
Nunez paced the offense with two RBIs, finishing 1-for-3 with a triple.
Game 2: Prairie View A&M 8, Alcorn State 0
The Panthers carried their momentum into the nightcap, where Kayla Adams delivered a dominant performance in the circle and Prairie View A&M cruised to an 8-0 shutout.
Adams (7-4) was outstanding, tossing a complete-game four-hit shutout while walking none and striking out four.
Prairie View A&M wasted little time getting on the board in the first inning when Mia Nunez launched a two-run home run with Kayla Zaid aboard to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers added single runs in the third and fourth innings before exploding for five runs in the fifth, their biggest inning of the game. The rally was highlighted by a two-run triple from Kendall McCants, which helped Prairie View A&M pull away.
Nunez powered the offense in Game 2, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs, accounting for two of Prairie View A&M's extra-base hits. The Panthers once again out-hit the Lady Braves, 9-4, and capitalized on scoring opportunities by going 4-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Zaid also contributed on the base paths, recording two stolen bases in the win.
